We know we've been quiet lately, but it's because we've been hard at work in the studio. And we've got a new song to share! Fill Me With Wonder is what would happen if Texas Swing and Bossa Nova hooked up and raised their kid on Tin Pan Alley. Listen below and scroll down to learn the story behind the song. :)

Join us June 6 as we Unite for Veterans!

We're proud to announce that we'll be performing at the Unite for Veterans, Unite for America Rally on June 6 from 1-4pm at Cleveland, Ga.'s Freedom Park (exact time TBA).

Join us as we show support for our 9th Congressional District Veterans. There will be music, guest speakers, calls to action, and candidate information tents. Create signs that support our Vets or protest the terrible policies that will hurt them. Bring chairs, umbrellas (for shade), and American flags to proudly wave. Food is permitted and water will be provided. Dogs are welcome. The event is free, but reservations are requested.

The story behind the song: Fill Me With Wonder

Where did the idea for Fill Me With Wonder come from?

The Jewish calendar differs from the one most Americans follow. For us, it’s 5785, not 2024-2025. Every September/October, we celebrate the turning of a page, from one year into the next. There are eight days between when the book of life is opened and sealed, and I love how we’re given the chance to choose how we want to step into the new year. During the Rosh Hashana service, there was a line in the liturgy that jumped out at me: “I’m closing the door on this cursèd year.” That was the line that gave me the idea for this song.

What inspired the lyrics?

Some of the phrases, like “fill me with wonder” and “fill me with awe” are fragments of poems, songs and prayers we sing during this High Holiday season. Around these fragments, I filled in my own prayers. I felt unbalanced and prone to despair, so this song became a talisman to buoy my spirits when I feel low.

What’s Fill Me With Wonder about?

The song is about how joy is a form of rebellion. It is a protective charm against nihilism. When you feel sad, I hope you sing it and feel better armed against everything that threatens you.

How the song came together

Steven and I were sitting at his kitchen table. He shared with me a new progression that was funky, bouncy and lots of fun.

“This song is really special,” he said. “It needs words that are really bright. I don’t want anything dark.”

I flipped through my “Needs Music” file of lyrics and paused at Fill Me With Wonder.

“I have something that I think is perfect,” I said. “But I don’t know if you’ll like it.” I was convinced it was too dark.

“Well, let’s try it,” he said.

And something miraculous happened. The lightness of his music transformed my dark words into joyful song.

Fun fact about Fill Me With Wonder

On the recording, both Steven and I are playing multiple instruments. I’m on bass and mandolin. Steven is playing resonator guitar and a normal guitar.

Originally the beginning of the track were filled with lots of whoops — Steven and I being silly. He left two in. They remind me of the whoops at the beginning of the Austin Powers theme song.
