The story behind Kisses for Christmas

Where did the idea for Kisses for Christmas come from?

Kristi and I improvised a Christmas song during our first holiday together and intended to turn it into something, but two Christmases passed by without doing anything with it. This year, I decided to make it happen.

What inspired the lyrics?

At first we thought it would be an Eartha Kitt-style Santa Baby, but maybe even sillier. But then I realized it was a valid message that deserved a more classic treatment. Though it’s still lighthearded, it’s not as kitchy as originally imagined. It’s actually pretty sweet.

What’s Kisses for Christmas about?

It’s a reminder that Christmas isn’t about things. It’s about people.

How the song came together

I sang the demo so Kristi could learn the song. Originally, I wanted her to solo, but I really enjoyed singing it. Kristi suggested we turn it into a duet, so we did. After all, kisses take two.

Fun fact about Kisses for Christmas

While we were recording, we’d take breaks to go outside to listen to the takes on my front porch. Every time we did so, wind chimes would kick up, and they were in the right key! It was too good not to capture and mix into the song.
