The story behind Lazy Lovers
By Steven Glude
Where did the idea for Lazy Lovers come from?
It was born of feeling appreciated by a non-lazy lover, and of thinking back to the times when I didn’t feel appreciated, seen, or valued.
What’s the song about?
How to be lame in three verses. I mean, c’mon, “Will they find the time to follow your hearse?’ And why do their needs always come first?
How the song came together
I had a lot of fun coming up with examples and called Kristi to get additional metaphors. “Have you ever had a lazy lover?” I asked. She replied, “How much time do you have?”
I demoed the song in my office by sticking a mic on an amp, and we took that track into the studio and built the rest of the song around it. Kristi added bass, and I had fun coming up with a nasty guitar solo. I wasn’t sure at first if it would be a Mayberry Wine song because of the electric guitar. Is it still indie folk? Ultimately, we decided it is because it is us, and we do what we want.
Fun facts about Lazy Lovers
- Three people auditioned for the drum part on this track. Kristi, our friend Jason Taylor Allen and I all took a stab. One night, I just sat down and killed it in one take.
- We could have written a how-to on being lame in twelve verses; we had so much material.
- “UH!”
