Story & Song: Where is the Wonder
Published 3 months ago • 2 min read
Hello lovers!
We had a big week last week! On February 13, we did our professional gig at MadLife in Woodstock, entertaining about 115 people with our love songs. We also submitted a video of LAVENDER for NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest (a dream of ours). If you listen closely, you’ll notice some jingly percussion right before the bridge. No, that’s not bells, it's Buba Jin, one of five dogs not so patiently watching us play. He felt the urge to shake himself up and get closer to the love. If you watch till the end you can see our super secret handshake.
This week, we wanted to share a very special song that reminds us of hot summer nights in the ‘70s. This is called WHERE IS THE WONDER. And yes, that is an Irish pennywhistle — Kristi’s grown very fond of playing it.
In Joy,
Steven & Kristi
The story behind the song: Where is the Wonder
By Kristi Casey
Where did the idea for Where is the Wonder come from?
I took a full-time job after being on my own for three years. When I worked for myself, I was able to prioritize self-care and that gave me a different perspective on what matters.
When I re-entered the workforce what struck me was how out of balance people seemed to be—stressed to the max, working way too late, and skipping meals. For what? It made them so unhappy.
What inspired the lyrics?
One of my dearest friends confessed, “I don’t have any dreams.”
It was a crushing statement. It got me thinking about where dreams come from. I realized they derive from curiosity and a sense of wonder.
That’s what my friend lost. So I wrote this song to help figure out how to help her find it.
What’s Where is the Wonder about?
Where is the Wonder is about getting off the treadmill of other people’s business and expectations and going within to discover who you are, what you need, and what you want to be doing.
Once you find that inner voice and center of gravity, then you can start to repair the wounds the world’s given you. You realize that you don’t need any of that external stuff—everything you need is within.
And when you can really see yourself, that wonder generates all sorts of healing.
How the song came together
This was a Reese’s love song—the chocolate of my lyrics wrapped in the peanut butter of one of Steven’s awesome riffs. Steven’s fingers give birth to a million musical motifs a day and I’m always writing scraps of poetry.
What I’ve discovered is that it’s a lot of fun to sing somber lyrics to joyous melodies. So when I heard this riff, I knew it would be good for Where is the Wonder.
Fun fact about Where is the Wonder
The day after Steven and I wrote the song, I met the friend who inspired it for lunch and played it for her. She loved the juxtaposition of beautiful music with raw, despairing words.
Her favorite lyrics were I want to punch through walls and wreck this place and Does God really need my praise? I don’t think so. She laughed out loud when she heard those phrases.
I didn’t have to tell her who I wrote it for. She said, “This is my song. I love it.”
